The Rotary Club of Currumbin Coolangatta Tweed
is a proud supporter of the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital.

Recently, after many months of fundraising the club was proud to present Dr Michael and his staff a flexible endoscope to be used to help save the lives of our native waterlife.

The endoscope is a highly sophisticated (and expensive) piece of surgical equipment that allows the veterinarian to without surgery, to extract lines, fishhooks, and other foreign objects, from the gut of our native animals and waterlife.

One example of its use is if the patient is a turtle, in the past the patient was cut open to retrieve the foreign matter, then put back together and suffered weeks of rehabilitation and risk of infection.

With the flexible endoscope, the very narrow tube containing a pair of forceps and a camera is inserted into the throat of the patient and the offending object removed within minutes. The result being the patient did not suffer being cut open, did not suffer weeks of rehabilitation with the risk of infection, and could be released back into the wild within 24 hours.

The hospital recuperation area was free for other patients, hospital staff were free from weeks of attending the patient.

Survival rate of affected wildlife patients increased to 90%

A good outcome for all…
